Can anyone point me to some beginner issues or where should I get started from? My primary interest is in Machine Learning and Image processing.

Welcome and glad to hear you are interested in OpenAstronomy.
As OpenAstronomy is a collection of libraries, I recommend looking at the member list: Members and visit any member that look like they might cover a topic you are interested in.
Most of them will have a collection of repositories which will have open beginner issues and you will be able to start there. Each member has its own rules and workflows, so it is important to locate where that information is and get in touch with the community.
