I would be honoured to serve on the new Steering Committee to continue to help develop and grow SunPy. I have been actively involved in SunPy since late 2012, and have served as lead developer for a large amount of that time. Since I got involved SunPy has grown from a small single package to a large number of different packages each attracting different contributors, as well as a growing ecosystem of affiliated packages not maintained by the project.
In a role on the new Steering Committee, I would seek to continue to grow the community to ensure we have enough contributors and maintainers and an increasing user base. To achieve this will require continuing to do everything we already do well, like maintaining the packages with consistent releases and dependable policies, but we also need to be in a position to attract direct funding for the project to allow us to pay contributors to spend more of their time on the project. This means we need clear governance and financial processes, with an engaged community.
I hope that this new governance structure can facilitate more active participation in the running of the project, both from the community and those who serve in project roles, to enable these goals to be met, and I hope to be able to be a part of that.
