2024 Steering Committee Election: Laura Hayes

I would be very happy to serve on the SunPy Steering Committee and contribute to the project’s continued growth. I’ve been actively involved with the SunPy project for the past few years, building on my experience as a user from the early days throughout my PhD. Since 2019, I’ve contributed code to the core package and affiliated packages, and I have taken on the project community role of Education and Communications Lead. In this role, I’ve worked on developing tutorials and showcases at meetings and summer schools, and I’ve promoted the use and adoption of SunPy and affiliated packages to the scientific community.

As a member of the Steering Committee, I would use my experience as a scientific user of the SunPy ecosystem to serve as a link between the community and the project’s development. My goal is to promote the adoption and use of SunPy tools across new/current missions (e.g. Solar Orbiter) and scientific studies, ensuring that our community’s needs are met and that the SunPy ecosystem can push forward solar research. I would focus on engaging with the scientific community to gather feedback, identify areas for improvement, and encourage contributions from a range of users and developers.

I am particularly focused on coordinating with research groups interested in further integrating SunPy into their work and developing their own codes within our ecosystem standards. I’ll also work with the SunPy team to look for new funding opportunities for maintenance and development of the ecosystem and support our contributors. Furthermore, I am committed to fostering a welcoming environment by upholding the SunPy code of conduct, ensuring that our community remains inclusive and health
