I am announcing my participation in the 2024 Astropy Coordination Committee election.
Although I have been a maintainer for astropy.coordinates
for a couple of years by now, I am still a relative newcomer to the project compared to most other people with a named role. It is therefore my hope that if I am elected to the Coordination Committee I might be able to offer a fresh perspective and help point out things that should be changed, but are not being noticed by anyone else simply because they are used to them. It is also my goal to help ensure that Astropy keeps up with developments in the broader Python ecosystem and utilizes modern Python tooling effectively for the benefit of both users and contributors. For example, type annotations could help users by enabling better IDE autocompletion, new contributors by catching some categories of errors before they even open a pull request, and experienced contributors by allowing them to refactor with greater confidence. But Astropy is old enough to predate Python typing, so adopting it is not simple and deserves attention from the highest level to coordinate efforts between different packages and sub-packages.
