How to get into -GSOC 2026

Hi everyone,

I’m new to open-source and I’m interested in contributing to the Astroquery project for GSoC 2026.
Can someone guide me on where to start, what skills I should focus on, and how I can begin contributing to Astroquery’s code or documentation?
Any beginner-friendly issues or setup instructions would be very helpful.
Thank you!”

Hello @jash-star,

Glad to hear you are interested in participating in GSoC with OpenAstronomy.

As things stand right now, there is no GSoC 2026, Google have not announced the program nor are applications open. With that in mind, I would recommend joining the Astropy Slack which has an astroquery channel and chatting there: Astropy | Get Help

There you will find the maintainers and they should be able to guide you further.

I would also encourage you to read the Contributing Guide in the Astropy documentation: Contributing — Astropy v8.0.0.dev141+g9aedf2b90 These will apply to any project under the Astropy Org which includes Astroquery.

Hi @jash-star,

While we haven’t yet collected project ideas for next year’s GSoC, I am quite confident we won’t have one for astroquery (I am one of the maintainers and we definitely won’t have capacity to mentor projects).

And it is very unlikely that we will have one for the astropy library either as there was no mentoring capacity for GSoC in the past many years.

I would recommend to come back in a few months, you will have an easier time to pick a project that will have GSoC projects running.
